The role

To underwrite Heavy Industries business in accordance with the department's business plans and guidelines in order to achieve an underwriting profit.

Key accountabilities

  • To assist the Head of International Heavy Industries in:
  • Maintaining a profitable portfolio
  • Developing the Heavy Industries portfolio with the appropriate balance in terms of geography, segmentation, limit profiles, and accumulations
  • To assist the Head of International Heavy Industries in the development of monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting
  • To be aware of and to comply with the FCA Principles for Business and, if applicable, the FCA Statements of Principle and Code of Practice for Approved Persons
  • To develop new business in line with the divisional business plan
  • To underwrite individual accounts in accordance with corporate guidelines and protocols
  • To maintain/enhance the Energy brand through marketing, as well as attendance and participation at industry conferences
  • To provide an efficient service to clients and brokers using risk based solutions developed through integrated underwriting and claims processes
  • Responsible for monitoring of all claims relating to business personally underwritten and assist in the coordination and communication with Claims Department
  • Assist with developing and modifying Policy Wordings, Clauses and Exclusions as circumstances require
  • Adhere to all relevant Lloyd's guidelines and practices

Skills & experience

  • Ideally ACII qualified with substantial, sector-specific underwriting experience
  • 10+ years' experience in the Energy insurance industry with an emphasis on Heavy Industries underwriting
  • Bachelor degree strongly preferred
  • Continuing education and coursework relevant to the insurance industry highly desirable
  • Strong of knowledge of:
    • Energy aggregate recording, monitoring, and reporting (including tools used to perform these duties)
    • Energy underwriting including technical knowhow, rate development, and policy wordings
    • The Heavy Industries industry including market dynamics
    • Broking houses and the main account handlers and placing brokers in the London market (overseas knowledge a plus)
  • Good interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • A high degree of competency in Mathematics
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills
  • Good IT skills as appropriate
  • Adaptable to change in a fluid commercial environment
  • Comfortable working in a team environment
  • Willing to use own initiative within authorised parameters
  • Able to travel abroad when required
