The Underwriting Operations team supports the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) in carrying out responsibilities for underwriting profitability and oversight. These include overall responsibility for combined ratio performance, business planning, underwriting risk and ensuring compliance with underwriting standards, limits and appetites including local regulations such as those set by Lloyd's. The team provides support for both formal and informal underwriter referrals on risks and wordings that are outside an underwriter's authority or where advice is sought. The team has a similar role regarding claims; setting standards, ensuring compliance and acting as a central resource.

Key accountabilities

* Support the CUO in supervising underwriting from the perspectives of profitability, risk and oversight
* Assist in ensuring that our underwriting is profitable; ensuring that high standards of pricing and portfolio management practices are met
* Coordinate the planning process and manage the Lloyd's relationship
* Work with the CUO to manage the known elements of aggregation risk
* Ensure compliance with all underwriting regulations
* Report to the Underwriting Committee on the above activities
* Continuously challenge how the above objectives are met

Skills & experience

* Experience within or close to the front line of an underwriting operation
* Strong numeracy skills blended with a high sense of commerciality
* An understanding of what constitutes excellent pricing and portfolio management in insurance
* Ideally some knowledge of Lloyd's and its planning and performance processes
* A strong ability to build personal relationships both internally and externally
* Strong influencing and negotiation skills for both internal and external parts of the role
* The ability to work both as part of a team and alone and to demonstrate high levels of autonomy and initiative
* Comfort with providing challenge above, below and across an organisation
* An interest in and understanding of current and future trends in the global insurance market and wider economy and how they should be navigated
* A desire to have a positive impact on the success of a growing insurance operation
